Carbide bits have cutting flutes and are commonly used by makers for shaping or removing enhancement product; diamond bits use an abrasive coating and are used for cuticle and surface work. Check each bit's labeled purpose, shape, grit, shank and training requirements before use.
Choose an e-file bit by its maker-labeled use, profile, grit and the surface you are working on. Material alone is not enough to choose a bit.
Compare the materials
| Bit type | Common construction | What makers describe |
|---|---|---|
| Carbide | Cutting flutes | Product shaping or removal on specified enhancement materials |
| Diamond | Abrasive coating | Cuticle-area, skin-surface or refinement work, depending on shape and grit |
Erica’s ATA describes carbide bits as toothed or fluted tools for product shaping and removal, and diamond bits as abrasive bits for cuticle or surface work. Its nail-bit education and FAQ includes model-specific cautions. KUPA also describes its carbide and diamond bit designs. Follow the exact maker’s use instructions instead of transferring one shape’s purpose to every bit.
Check fit and care
Confirm the shank diameter and collet type in the handpiece manual. KUPA identifies some MANIPro bits as 3/32 inch; this does not mean every handpiece accepts every bit.
Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions and your state board’s disinfection rules. A bit’s material does not establish whether a particular cleaning method or service is allowed.

Common questions
Which nail drill bit is used for product removal?
Some makers designate carbide bits for enhancement-product shaping and removal. Follow the instructions for the exact bit, grit and material.
Can a carbide bit be used on a natural nail?
Do not assume it is suitable. Erica's ATA cautions that carbide bits can damage natural nails; follow the exact bit label and professional training.
Are diamond bits only for natural nails?
No universal purpose applies to every shape and grit. Check the maker's use description for each bit.
Will a 3/32-inch bit fit my e-file?
Only if the handpiece accepts that shank and collet. Confirm fit in the handpiece manual.
